- After close / Before open
- Whether a company reports its earnings after the market shuts or before it opens.
- Average cost
- What you paid per share across everything you hold of that symbol. Buying more at a different price blends into it.
- Beat / Miss / In-line
- Reported earnings against the analyst estimate — above, below, or within a small margin of it.
- Channel
- A discussion space inside an organisation. See chapter 26.
- Closed round trip
- A sell matched against an earlier buy. The unit the win rate counts.
- ETF
- A fund that trades like a share. The app uses them to track sectors and broad market themes.
- GICS sectors
- The standard set of eleven industry sectors used on the Sectors page.
- Limit / Market / Stop
- The three order types. See 19.1.
- Manager / Lecturer
- Roles inside a single channel, granted by that channel's managers. They say nothing about your account elsewhere.
- Organisation
- A self-contained group of channels with its own members.
- P/L
- Profit and loss — what a position is worth now against what you recorded paying for it.
- Trade log
- The permanent, unmodifiable record of every order that filled. See 19.3.
- TTM
- Trailing twelve months — the last four reported quarters added together.
- Virtual portfolio
- A portfolio of positions recorded in the app that you do not actually own. All portfolios here are virtual. See 1.1.
- Watchlist
- A named list of symbols you follow but do not necessarily hold.
- Verified
- A position the app watched open: priced and timestamped by our server at the moment you placed it, and written to a log nobody can edit. It is the only kind that counts towards a public track record.
- Not verified
- A holding you recorded yourself, including the price. Shown in orange, kept separate from the verified figures, and counted towards nothing anyone else sees.
- Pending action
- An order you have placed that has not filled yet — a limit or stop still waiting for its price, or a market order placed while the market is shut.
- Market cap
- Share price multiplied by the number of shares: what the market says the whole company is worth. It is what sizes the tiles on the heatmap.
- Net margin
- Profit as a percentage of revenue — how much of each dollar taken in is left at the end.
- Free cash flow
- The cash a business generated after paying for the equipment and property it needs to keep running. Harder to flatter than profit, which is why it sits beside it.
- Seasonals
- Each year's price path rebased to zero on 1 January and overlaid, so calendar patterns are visible. A pattern, not a prediction.
- Treemap
- The kind of chart the heatmap uses: nested rectangles where area means one thing and colour means another.
