What it is

The 30-year Treasury bond is the US government's longest-dated debt. Its yield is what investors ask to lend for three decades.

Pension funds and insurers, whose obligations stretch far into the future, are natural buyers. Despite the name, 30-year mortgage rates follow the 10-year yield more closely, because most mortgages are repaid or refinanced long before thirty years.

What moves it

  • Expectations for inflation over the long run — the more inflation investors fear, the more yield they want.
  • How much the government is borrowing, and how willing investors are to hold long bonds (the term premium).
  • It moves much less with a single Fed decision than the 2-year does.
