What the FOMC does
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is the part of the Federal Reserve that sets the target for the federal funds rate — the interest rate that ripples through every loan, mortgage and savings account in the United States.
It meets eight times a year, usually over two days. The decision is published in a statement at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on the last day, and the Fed Chair holds a press conference at 2:30 p.m. The minutes follow three weeks later.
Four of the eight meetings — marked below — also publish the Summary of Economic Projections, including the 'dot plot' of where each official expects the rate to go.
