What it measures
The Consumer Price Index (CPI), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, measures how the prices urban consumers pay for a basket of goods and services change over time. It is the most quoted measure of US inflation.
Headline CPI includes everything; core CPI leaves out food and energy, whose prices swing the most. The month-on-month change is quoted from the seasonally adjusted series and the year-on-year change from the unadjusted one — the pairing the BLS itself quotes. The report is released monthly at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.
